Angelica's Blog
Over and out
May 14, 2010All good things must come to an end. This has certainly been the story of this month. I just finished my junior year at Liberty. I will be moving out of the townhouse my brother and I have shared for a year. Some of my friends are graduating and moving on. And, I am sad to say, this is my last blog for Liberty.
Right now many chapters are closing but on the horizon I see many beginnings rising. I will be moving into a new apartment with a friend from worship team. I will gain a family member next weekend when my brother Caleb and Stephanie tie the knot. I go into my senior year at Liberty as the new treasurer for the Premed Honor Society. And who knows what will unfold as I look toward life after graduation?
The future is bright and wide open. I am sad that I will not be able to share my story with the blogosphere anymore. But I think it is for the best as I will be plenty busy with a heavy course load, volunteering and extracurriculars.
For anyone who reads this and wonders what happened to the girl Angelica, I will tell you...
She did not live happily ever after, the world is too wild a place for that. But she did chase her dreams as far as they took her and did her best to live in peace and love toward her fellow man. She did not always succeed, but she did get up every time she fell. She did not fulfill all her goals but tried instead to find joy in the journey.
I hope that will be true of my life and I wish a similar story for you.
No matter what life throws at you, keep your chin up and keep your eyes fixed on the kingdom of God. Any baseball player will tell you that the only way to catch a ball is to watch it all the way into your glove.
Peace be with you,

Jer. 29:12-13: "...you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart."
A shower in the deep end
May 5, 2010This past weekend was the second and final wedding shower for Stephanie. Lynchburg First Church of the Nazarene hosted the party on Sunday afternoon at Riverside Park.
We set up food drinks and blankets to sit on in what used to be a huge swimming pool. Rumor has it, they filled in the pool because racial tensions were so high when they tried to integrate it. Anyways, now it is a nice level lawn - the perfect place for an afternoon party.
Despite the blazing heat and bright sun, a wonderful time was had by all. We ate, socialized and watched Steph open gifts. People also wrote messages on mini chalkboards and got their picture taken - my friend's ingenius 'photo booth' idea! The party was low-key and relaxed - just the way I like it.
I needed to unwind after the stresses of the day... I was debating sharing this but here goes: I ran into another inanimate object with my car (see my previous post about the mailbox incident). This time it was a bush.
I was late to the party, lost, flustered, on the phone and trying to reverse my car in a random driveway all at once. I guess that was a neurological overload because I ended up hitting the gas instead of the brakes. "Crunch!"
Thank goodness I wasn't on the road! No one was hurt except for my poor car and my impoverished pride.
Speaking of crunch... This week is crunch time for final exams and the last homework assignments of the semester. One week today and this semester will be done for me!
Keep your chin up and your eyes on the road,
Angelica Atkins
Graduating, top of mountain
May 3, 2010

"What are men compared to rocks and mountains?"
The Rocky Mountains have a way of making you forget yourself. The stark contrast of snow and rock with a backdrop of poofy clouds and crystal blue sky is breathtaking.
I flew to Alberta, Canada this past weekend for my brother's graduation from Bible college. I was only there for two days because of school so I soaked up every moment with family and the mountains.
My favorite memory was our celebratory dinner in a log cabin bistro at the foot of the Three Sisters mountains. It was so good to sit around a table with my family, just like old times.
My family is spread across the continent so we don't get together often. But when we are together in the same place at the same time, we make up for lost time. We discussed everything from postmodernism to nature, told stories and laughed a lot.
I also enjoyed my brother's graduation. I beamed with pride as he accepted his diploma and as he unveiled his paintings at the graduation dinner. Josiah was chosen to do three paintings to hang in the school library as the 2010 class gift.
You can feel the anticipation here on campus as Liberty's graduation ceremony is just around the corner. Next week exams start and then it's summer! The taste of freedom is on the tip of my tongue. Of course, I only have four days of freedom before summer classes begin, but I'll take it!
Keep your chin up and lift your eyes to the hills,
Angelica Atkins

Waiting on the world to change
April 20, 2010I took my last dose of antimalarial today which means it has been four weeks since I was in Haiti. It seems like just yesterday. A group is going back this summer. I wish I could go but I am taking Organic Chemistry intensives for eight weeks. Who wants to travel to Haiti when you can have your nose in a textbook all summer?
Oh well, I will contine to do what I can from afar. Tomorrow, I am meeting Pastor Johnnie Moore with some of my team members. We are to discuss the Spring Break trip, the upcoming summer trip and I get to talk about our quest to get Haitian students to LU!
I pray that God will open hearts and doors and that he would give me the calm nerves and words I need.
My hopes are high because change is in the air...
There is always a feeling of anticipation that comes with the brisk breeze and fresh blooms of Spring. Classes are winding down, the courtyard is full of people again, summer sports are starting and academic freedom is just around the corner. Who knows what can happen in a season of new beginnings and nature's miracles?
I went for a walk at Blackwater Creek Trails the other day to admire Spring. Here are some pictures...
April Shower
April 14, 2010With just over a month to go until my brother's wedding, we have already started partying! This past Sunday, Stephanie had a bridal shower with all her friends in and around Lynchburg.
We had a sweet spread of pasta salad, chicken salad sandwiches, chocolate covered strawberries and my contribution...nanaimo bars. It was the best shower I have been to because everyone got to know each other and felt comfortable. Stephanie has chosen really good friends, a testament to her character. I am so lucky to get her as my sister-in-law!
Details for the wedding are starting to come together. I am helping out by creating scrapbook type center pieces. Maybe I'll post some picture when they are complete. Caleb and Stephanie's theme is travel so I am doing a center piece for Africa, San Francisco, Scotland, etc. You should see the invitations. They look just like a passport! I am definitely excited for the first wedding in our family. Opah!
Keep your chin up and look forward to something,
Angelica Atkins

Angelica, these stories are just fabulous! I had no idea you were writing about about our fun adventures. How neat-I am also blessed to have you as a sister;)
